Amartya Ray, the vice-presidential (VP) candidate of the "Samprityr Oikkyo" panel for the upcoming JUCSU elections at Jahangirnagar University, has been disqualified by the election commission, according to an announcement posted on the university website on Saturday.

Ray, a former president of a faction of the Bangladesh Students’ Union, was removed from the voter and candidate lists despite the final review list being published on August 29. He received the disqualification notice on September 6, just four days before the election, leading to widespread discussion and protests on campus.

Students and observers have raised concerns over the timing of the decision, with many criticizing the election commission as being dominated by teachers affiliated with the banned Awami League. Social media posts and campus debates suggest that students view the decision as politically motivated and potentially disruptive to the electoral process.

JUCSU Chief Returning Officer Professor Md. Moniruzzaman confirmed the disqualification, citing compliance with the university’s rules and regulations.
